Tim Woolcock

born 1952

Urban Matrix

Tim Woolcock was born in Lancashire in 1952 and after having left Arnold School attended London University where he gained a degree in Philosophy.  He taught in London Schools from 1974 to 1986 and ran a highly successful picture framing business until 1999 when he resumed his career as a painter.  He had always shown an interest in art and as a teenager would regularly visit the Grundy Art Gallery in Blackpool.  He began painting again  in the late 1990s and his work soon  became very popular with collectors of Modern British works.

He has a studio on a farm in Ireland, where he and his wife live and work for part of the year.  Influenced by artists working in the   mid 1950s,  his geometric fragmented shapes and  strong pigment paints have made his paintings very distinctive.  He has exhibited with the Russell Gallery, London; Lemon Street Gallery, Truro; Ransom Gallery, London and Jorgensen Fine Art in Dublin.  His work shows an affinity with Zen traditions and his landscapes of the Irish and English countryside are particularly evocative.

Gallery Notes:

Tim Woolcock is best known for his precise geometric compositions with meticulous line and pure brushwork.  Urban Matrix, from 2014, is an altogether more robust painting with dragged and scumbled surfaces and bold application.  The finished effect is highly reminiscent of techniques explored by the  post-war artists of St Ives.
