Bateson Mason was primarily known for the stylised coastal scenes and landscapes as seen in the permanent collection of the Hepworth Wakefield Gallery. This is a rare example of his oeuvre. Still Life with Yellow Jug portrays an interior domestic scene with a flattened perspective derived from cubism. There is an interesting dialectic between flat and three dimensional planes, enhanced by scraped and dragged surfaces.
