Winter Solstice is a painting which demonstrates the artist’s exploration of the effects of chance. This was something Hayter researched in his own theoretical writings on automatism and in the tachist nature of his work. In many ways it replicates his innovative techniques in “viscosity printing” with thicker and thinner layers of paint. The finished effect clearly shows his earlier associations with Abstract Expressionism in New York. L'Escoutay 1957 (Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge) is another fine example of this creativity.
