Cockrill’s first solo exhibition was held in 1984 in London.  He rapidly established an international reputation, with subsequent solo exhibitions being held in Dusseldorf and with Bernard Jacobson both in London and New York.  A retrospective was held at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool in 1995 and a further retrospective at the Royal West of England Academy in 1998.  Cockrill’s work has been included in many group exhibitions throughout Europe and in Australia.

Painted the year after his major retrospective at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Kingdom Blue 3 is part of a series of works based on a square central motif designed to symbolise a source of strength and power. The exhibition, A Portable Kingdom, was held at Bernard Jacobson Gallery, London before touring to Annandale Galleries, Sydney, Australia.
