Painter and teacher, born in London. First one man exhibition was at the Leicester Galleries in 1948. Principal of Chelsea College of Art from 1958 - 1965, keeper of the British collection and deputy director of the Tate Gallery 1965-67 and Slade Professor of Fine Arts at University College, London 1975 - 1985. Knighted in 1982 and made Royal Academician in 1989. The Tate Gallery is among a number of public collections holding his work. A retrospective exhibition of his work was held at the Arts Council in 1983.
