Jack Waldron (1923-1984)

Painter and sculptor, born in Swansea, and studied at Swansea School of Art from 1937-38, initially apprenticed as a commercial artist before joining the Royal Navy (1940-1945). Returning to Wales after the war, with further studies at Swansea College of Art 1946-49, Waldron taught sculpture at Stoke-on-Trent College of Art from 1951-1964, and from 1964 became senior lecturer in Fine Art at Stourbridge College of Art.


During the early 1960s Waldron exhibited throughout England and became a member of the Fellows of the Free Painters and Sculptors, the name ' free' standing for freedom of expression where artists with a modern approach were welcomed. Exhibitions were held annually in London with works from artists such as Cecil Stephenson, Francis Souza, Frank Avray Wilson, and Roy Turner Durrant, all of whom were part of this formative group.


Waldron's work is represented in public collections at the Arts Council Gallery, Cardiff, Contemporary Arts Society of Wales, and Whitworth Gallery, Rutherston Collection and City Art Gallery, Manchester.


One man exhibitions were held at the New Vision Centres and Grabowski Gallery in London during the 1960s, also Clare College, Cambridge and Werkunstschule, Krefeld, Germany
