Painter, Sculptor and and architectural designer, born in Fife, Scotland. He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, winning the Slade Scholarship in 1930. Held his first solo show at the Wertheim Gallery in 1938.
Gilbert then spent several years in Paris and Dublin, returning to Paris after World War II.
A member of the White Stag Group along with Basis Rakoczi and Kenneth Hall, whose works were illustrated in the catalogue of the Group's show at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Kilmainham in 2005.
The Arts Council and Tate Britain hold examples of his work.
