In the 1950's Durrant's work changed from figuration to abstraction. Woven together in his paintings Durrant proposes to the viewer various ways of interpreting and reading his works, and as in Composition 'August, Monday 1955' he has laid out the composition as if it were a musical score, or rhythmical verse.
