Hoyland had forged a distinctive personal style which advanced a startling use of simple shapes and high-key colour. The paintings defied the modernist insistence on a flat picture surface and instead emphasised the illusion of space. During the 1970s, Hoyland produced paintings such as 22.8.74 which are thickly painted and richly textural . Insistently abstract, these works possess an extraordinary material physicality. They became strongly fauve in nature and Hoyland proved to be an adept and skilled colourist, mixing and incorporating braveand bold combinations of colour.
