Frost's later works of the 1990's such as Spiral for Red show a refined simplicity, a reduction to primary colours and to the most simple and ancient of visual forms. He returned to painting a form that was not only one of the earliest in his own works, but one of the fundamental in visual culture, the spiral. As Frost approached his eightieth birthday his work became ever more celebratory and symbolic with a much simpler visual language. His output during the last decade of his life became more than colourful but also more audacious in its combination of discordant and complementary colours.
