●Frank Avray Wilson
ConfigurationSold
Directed by his own intellectual inquiry into quantum theory, Avray Wilson created a British response to Action painting and its European counterpart Tachism.
Configuration is just that, an assembly of palate-knife-pushed fins of oil paint. Despite Avray's protestations that form would emerge, 'unpredictably, autonomously', his mark making owes something to the natural rhythms found in the world. He found inspiration in matter itself; in raw elements, minerals and crystals. Academically trained as a scientist, Avray Wilson scrutinised elements or compounds under a microscope to witness the interplay of vibrating particles. These particles, whether seen or interpreted in quantum mechanics describe electron movement. The character and movement of these particles provided a catalyst for his painting.
Earlier works by Avray Wilson comprise of more regulated geometric forms. Avray Wilson created Configuration as a deliberate 'articulation of chaos,' asserting a shift in the artist's theory of the Universe. Avray Wilson made essential contributions to shaping post-war modern British art and enabling the emergence of significant trends.
