During the 1970s, Hoyland produced paintings such as 1.9.74 which are thickly painted and richly textural. Insistently abstract, these works possess an extraordinary material physicality. They have become strongly fauve in nature and Hoyland proves an adept and skilled colourist mixing and combining brave and bold combinations of colour.
