Clatworthy studied at Chelsea with Frink and showed at Hanover Gallery with Giacometti. His work focuses mostly on animal subjects, a field in which he excels. Study for Equestrian Monument is a more tactile and stylised example of his oeuvre.
Clatworthy did not sign or number his sculptures until he joined Waddington in the early 60's. All sculptures cast 1950's and very early 60's thus unmarked. Generally only the first cast in the edition of 8 was cast in the 50's. He parted with Hanover and Waddington partly due to his refusal to cast more.
