Hilton taught at Central School of Art and Design, London, 1954 -1956. He began making trips to Cornwall, initially staying with friend Patrick Heron, and subsequently renting a studio from him, Hilton moved permanently to Botallack, until 1965, when he was already an established member of the St Ives group.
Figurative elements return in Hilton's later work, most with a humorous tone. A major retrospective of his work was exhibited at the Hayward Gallery, London, 1993, a survey of his drawing at the Tate Gallery, St Ives, 1997.
Hilton's work is in numerous collections including; the Tate, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Museum and Fogg Art Gallery, Harvard.
