Two Bullfighters was painted following a visit to Andalusia with good friend Jeffrey Bernard in 1949. Minton's interest was inspired by Hemmingway's Death in the Afternoon and by the sense of theatre and focus it gave to male idolatry. Bernard Denir remarked that Minton's work was "well suited to the Mediterranean landscape with its harsh metallic colours and linear simplicity".
